What Really Happens to Teenage Girls Working in Toxic Environments (And Why It Matters More Than You Think)

Let's be honest, a first job is supposed to be exciting. It's where you gain you gain independence and make money which is always a plus in this economy. For many teenage girls, it's also their first introduction to the adult world. But for far too many, that introduction comes with something they didn't sign up for which is unfortunately sexual harassment. And while people still try and down play it as "not a big deal" or "part of life" the reality of it is much more severe than that. It isn't just an awkward interaction with your jerk of a boss, it has lasting mental health effects that can change the mindset of a teenage girl for life. Sexual harassment in the workplace has a negative impact on the mental health of teenage girls, leading to increased anxiety, lowered self-esteem, and long-term emotional distress. 

Here's the thing, being a teenage girl in an a new work place already comes with a learning curve. You have to figure out how to talk to coworkers, navigate the new job itself, and handle new responsibility. Now, imagine with all that is already on your plate, you add inappropriate comments and creepy behavior into the mix. What should have been a space for confidence building, becomes a space that causes uncertainty and anxiety. Girls who were sexually harassed were less satisfied with their jobs and supervisors, had higher levels of academic withdrawal, and were more apt to miss school than their non-harassed peers (Fineran). 

Clearly, no girl should have to deal with the effects of something like this because of a boss who can't control them self. This kind of sexual harassment in a work environment can prevent meaningful bonds and positive impacts at work and school (Fineran. This is because once the harassment has happened, the girls are less likely to put themselves out there like that again. I mean can you blame them? Can you imagine walking into work and trying to avoid the person who looks over your entire position?  That is the reality of teenage girls lives when this type of situation becomes their normal. Instead of focusing on doing a good job, they are trying to avoid certain people and change what they wear to not attract attention.

That kind of mental calculation can be exhausting. That is one of the main reasons anxiety ramps up in situations like these. Teenage girls with this anxiety are constantly on edge about upcoming shifts, clocking in, and all that comes with going back to the source of the sexual harassment. Anxiety has become a more increasing concern over the years and is found more in Generation Z than the other 3 generations before them (Anderson). Our generation is already anxious enough and the sexual harassment of teenage girls will not help their mental state. It's like adding gasoline to the already lit fire. 

This type of anxiety doesn't just stay in the work place either. That anxiety follows you home and infiltrates other aspects of your life like self-esteem. Teenage girls are already vulnerable to not being enough and negative attention like this can really make them question of they are enough. A creepy boss that reduces you to your body, or makes comments about your appearance makes its way into your thoughts wether you want then to or not. It sends a message that sticks in the brain of a developing woman. Even if the teenage girl knows the behavior is wrong logically , it can still affect how she sees herself. 

It can also affect other areas like how she dresses, how she interacts with others, and who she decides to let in. All of these will lead to her confidence shrinking heavily. For a lot of girls, speaking up feel riskier at the fear of losing their job. So, instead she continues to shrink and feel trapped at the arms of a gross boss. So a lot of the time, nothing gets said (Muller).  Keeping all the feeling bottled up can make it hard to move on or even function normally day-to-day. Over time this will chip away at the self-esteem they once had.

The predators who do such a thing to a young girl have the confidence to do this because of the power imbalance they hold. Teenage girls when starting a new job are obviously at an entry level position. They don't have as much authority as their predator. When something inappropriate happens it's not as easy to call out due to the authority the manager or boss holds over their head. The underlying fear of not being belied or being made into a joke because they are young can be extremely harmful.

The scary realization is that all of these effects don't stop when they clock out. That is what makes this issue so serious. The emotional impact of harassment at work can linger for years. Some teenage girls will carry this experience throughout adult hood and into future job experiences. A whopping 40% of women have come forward saying they have experienced some sort of sexual harassment in the work place (Muller). That number is eye opening and means almost half of woman are still struggling with these after their teenage years. Trusting future employers with power can be hard and their confidence wont come back overnight. 

Lots of people say, " sexual harassment can happen anywhere", which can be true. But, what makes this so serious is the power imbalance that is shared between the boss and teenage girl employee. The dynamic is one that is so unique but is also unfortunately way too common. Work places are supposed to be structured places and when that is jeopardized it can cause lasting issues down the road.

At the end of the day, this isn't just about workplace behavior. This issue is about protecting the developing teenage girls. Sexual harassment doesn't just create uncomfortable moments, it makes lasting mental health struggles that create harm deeper than we can see. And if we want teenage girls to grow into confident, secure adults, then their earliest work experiences need to reflect that—not undermine it.
